Königstein Fortress Opening Hours
The two seasons
Summer hours run from roughly late March to 1 November: 09:00 to 18:00, daily, with no closing day. Winter hours run from roughly 2 November to mid or late March: 09:00 to 17:00, daily. The changeover dates move a little from year to year, which is why I have written “roughly” twice, and why the sentence below matters more than this one.
Check the fortress’s own calendar for the day you are coming. Single closure days appear year to year beyond Christmas Eve, and no independent guide — this one included — should be the last thing you read before you set out. I am telling you what the pattern is, not guaranteeing your date.
The dates that are different
- 24 December — closed.
- 31 December — 09:00 to 15:30.
- 1 January — 10:00 to 17:00, the one day it does not open at 09:00.
- Advent weekends — 09:00 to 19:00, for the historical Christmas market. More on events.
Last admission, and the windows
Two different deadlines, and people mix them up. Last admission is an hour before closing: 17:00 in summer, 16:00 in winter. The ticket windows in the Torhaus sell from 09:00 to 17:00 regardless of season. So on a summer evening the windows close at the same moment as the last admission, and in winter they are long irrelevant by the time the gate shuts. If you are cutting it fine, the thing to check is not the closing time but the season of the Festungsexpress. Between April and October the last road-train leaves the fortress at 17:00, well before a summer closing. Between November and March there is no road-train at all and you walk down in the dark.
What is open when the fortress is
Not everything. The Panoramaaufzug runs April to October only; the passenger and goods lift from 1967–1970 runs year-round. The garrison church exhibition is April to October. Most of the catering — the tavern, the officers’ mess, the bakery, the beer garden at the Blitzeichenplateau — also runs April to October, which is worth knowing before you plan lunch in February. Planning a winter visit
Winter here is not a lesser version of summer, it is a shorter one. Nine to five, no road-train, no panoramic lift, most of the catering shut, and the light going by mid-afternoon in December. The compensations are an empty plateau, the Christmas market on Advent weekends, and the Elbe valley under fog with the rock above it. The best time to visit weighs that properly.
